EMR Template Building Course

Course Instructional Design

This course, titled “Build basic letter message and encounter templates” was part of a “Configuration for Go-Live” learning path I created for TELUS Health.

Impact
#

With this series, the goal was to reduce repetitive instructor-led hours from the new clinic onboarding process.

The learning path became an onboarding requirement for all new clinics and removed a minimum of 4 out of 6 configuration instructor hours per implementation.

Implementation specialists were able to have deeper, more strategic conversations with clients in the remaining 1 to 2 hours. And, clients felt stronger ownership of their domain and confidence in their abilities with the system.

Design Highlights
#

This series brought a new approach to course design for the team. Rather than purely informational presentation, the course focused on hands-on activities representative of what learners do on the job.

Some enabling knowledge is still presented at the beginning, but tips and job aids are focused on performance support and strategic choices. This helps learners make connections between their choices in settings and the effects elsewhere in the system.

The mini-challenges were also a new opportunity to represent challenging decisions learners made on the job. They provided a space to practice those decisions in a safe environment and see the results. I wanted to avoid simply having learners breeze through a knowledge check or multiple choice exam – something they don’t have to complete daily on the job.

I designed and produced the course package using Articulate Rise, Camtasia, Vyond, and Figma. I received feedback reviews from my team and stakeholder validation from the implementation department. I did not produce the embedded training videos: “Creating encounter templates”, “Creating message and quick message templates”, and “Creating letter templates”.
